- MEMBERSHIP PRESENTATION: Fairfax County Public School FY 2013 Budget Request
- Filling teacher vacancies -
- School system stops hiring to fill current year vacancies in February.
- Substitute teachers are used until the end of the school term
- The FCPS advertised school budget is available on the school's website
- The Fairfax County School Board adopted the FY 2013 Advertised Budget at its February 9 regular business meeting. The Board also authorized a limited scope boundary study for Freedom Hill and Lemon Road Elementary Schools, authorized an 8-classroom building addition at Lemon Road Elementary, and directed the Superintendent to present a recommendation for an expanded scope of an additional boundary for consideration no later than spring 2014.

- Standards of Learning pass rate: 92%
- The school system is closing gaps and raising the bar - minority students are lessoning the gap
- the percentage of students opting for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs is increasing
- SAT scores were 1664 in 2009 and 1654 in 2010, the only locality with higher scores is the City of Falls Church
- FCPS student composition -
- Total student enrollment: 181608
- 7.8% are enrolled in the English for students of other languages (ESOL) program
- 24% are eligible for free or reduced meals
- FCPS staff composition - there are 23520 employees, of which 92.9% are school based.

- New positions: 743
- Instruction Positions are assigned on a per pupil ratio
- Facility Support positions are based on both a per pupil ratio and a facility square footage
- $4.3 allocated to schools with achievement gaps
- Two new Schools:
- Lacy in Annandale - 13 new positions
- South County Middle School is spinning off from South County Secondary School
- Growth:
- FY 13 will see 3979 more students with 677 new positions
- Future growth will be seen in Tysons Corner and along the Rt 1 corridor
- Market rate adjustment of 2% included in budget request
- Includes step adjustment
- Custodial market rate adjustment
- Advertised budget
- Adds 20 field custodial positions to 13 current positions which are used to fill in for vacancies
- Eliminates athletic fees (at a cost of $1.7 million)
- Includes projected $24.9 million in state aid
- Includes loss of $21.3 million from federal government stimulus funding
- Comparisons:
- Fairfax County - $12.8K per student
- Montgomery County - $14.7K per student
- Arlington County - $18K per student
