        The Pohanka Automotive Group recently submitted a zoning application to Fairfax County to rezone and grant special exceptions for 10 acres of land on Stonecroft Boulevard to permit a new automobile dealership (Honda) and a Pohanka body shop. The application was accepted by the County for processing. The property is generally located across Stonecroft from the new Audi and Mercedes dealerships and the Nissan dealership.
        The Planning Commission hearing is scheduled for December 15th.
        The application consists of a rezoning from I-5 to C-8, and two special exceptions: one for automobile sales and one for the body shop (major vehicle service establishment).

     All announced Sully District and county-wide candidates running in Fairfax County are invited to make brief statements and respond to questions.
     Each candidate will be given time for a five-minute opening statement (order to be determined by the drawing of numbers from a hat at the start of the proceedings, with the opposing candidate of the same district immediately following) with a general question and answer period ending at 9:30 PM or until the last question is answered (which ever comes first). Due to other conflicts some candidates will leave early or arrive late. Those candidates who can not attend can have a proxy make their opening statement for them if identified beforehand by name in writing, but their proxy will not be able to participate in the Q & A portion of the evening.

   • PCA 82-C-016 for Rachel Carson Middle School to be considered on 27 October
     • The SDC reviewed the PCA and supported the school's request for an additional school bus only exit (see our August 2011 minutes)
     • Exiting school buses will be restricted to right turns only
     • The exit could be used for non-school bus traffic only on back to school nights or other such activities, but SDC wanted the school to place a traffic control officer at the exit to ensure exiting traffic only made right turns similar to the school buses
     • At a meeting on 12 October, Dean Tistadt speaking for Rachel Carson Middle School committed to having a school staffer out there for traffic control during back to school nights and other high volume night time activities. Fairfax County staff member Kris Abrahamson stated that this commitment didn't have to be in the proffers, but Dean said they would do it anyway.
     • The applicant has modified the proffer to include language allowing the School Board to make future improvements to the site without the need for another PCA, so long as the changes do not affect the new driveway.

   • Ellanor C. Lawrence Park Unveils New Interactive Exhibits
     • Two new interactive areas are now open to the public at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park’s Walney visitor center. Visitors of all ages can explore the park’s natural and cultural history through hands-on exploration and discovery.
     • Younger children can read illustrated books, play with nature-themed puzzles and games, and dress up like a farmer from the late 1700s. In the Investigation Playce, older children and parents can search through drawers full of objects that help interpret the park’s long history and the abundance of natural resources found there.
     • The exhibits will change over time to highlight seasonal activities and program themes at the park. Objects in the discovery drawers will also change.
     • The exhibits were funded by the Ellanor C. Lawrence trust fund, which was established at the time the parkland was donated in 1971. Site staff built and installed the exhibits.
     • Ellanor C. Lawrence Park is located at 5040 Walney Road in Chantilly, VA. The Walney visitor center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Tuesdays) and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free.

   • Fairfax County is facing a significant shortage of Election Officers for the upcoming November 8, 2011 Election!
     • The Fairfax County Electoral Board recruits and assigns Election Officers to each of our 239 Precincts each General and Special Election. With the new redistricting changes came six new polling places/precincts for the Sully District. There are at least seven Precincts in the Sully area that need at least 4 more Election Officers, (two of those needing seven).
     • Fairfax County is facing a significant shortage of Election Officers for the upcoming November 8, 2011 Election, as well as the upcoming year. Each polling place requires about nine to eleven Election Officers to service their precinct and at this time, we are hundreds short. The Election Officers main job is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of our election process. The typical day includes arriving one hour before polls open to set up voting machines, hang up pertinent signage, ready the polling room, process voters, assist with voting machines and finally, securing the machines and closing down the polling place. As you may know, it is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in the election process, or want to become more involved with the election process through Government or future campaigns.
     • The Election Officer is typically a volunteer position, but Fairfax County does pay a stipend of $100 for the day. Election Officers must be a registered Virginia voter, does not need to reside in Fairfax County, and must fulfill Federal I-9 employment eligibility verification requirements. We make every effort to assign the Officer to the closest precinct to their home or one they request.
     • Recruits not only receive a two hour training class, but they also have access to training videos on our website; www.fairfaxcounty.gov/eb to refresh themselves at their leisure. Training classes start this week and go on throughout the month and are located throughout the county.

I think we will all enjoy hearing about The Reston for Life planning committee's work, particularly their "let's get it going now" attitude. Many Fairfax communities could, can and will benefit from their extensive research and community tools to make a similar program work for them.

     • The prospect of Virginia’s withdrawal from the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) has prompted great concern among those who depend upon the Potomac for water supply. Delegate Kaye Kory has initiated a legislative briefing on the importance of the ICPRB and what it might mean if Virginia were no longer to support it or participate in its work. The briefing, which is open to the public, will be conducted by Joseph Hoffman, Executive Director of the ICPRB. Also on hand will be officials of local water utilities, as well as several legislators interested in what legislative action would be most appropriate in Richmond when the General Assembly meets in January.

   • Comment on Multimodal Transportation Investments - Your Transportation Dollars at Work
     • The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) is holding public meetings so that the public may discuss projects that are currently funded in the Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) and provide comments for the development of the Fiscal Years 2013-2018 Six-Year Improvement Program.
     • Projects include interstate highway, road, rail, bicycle, pedestrian and public transportation initiatives. These projects emphasize bridge and reconstructive pavement projects, along with projects for safety and congestion improvements to Virginia’s transportation system.
