• Coordination of meetings Sully Planning Comminsioner John Litzenberger has suggested that the Sully Ditrict Council of Citizens' Associations and the Western Fairfax County Citizens Association (WFCCA) coordinate their land use meetings.
  • Land Use meetings meetings would be held jointly with the WFCCA on the night that the WFCCA Land Use committee meets, the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
  • SDC membership meetings would be held on the regularly scheduled 4th Wednesday of the month.

• Northern Virginia Cash Campaign Free Income Tax Preparation
  • If you worked in 2008, and earned less than $42,000, then you may qualify. IRS certified volunteers will ensure you receive the maximum tax refund and help determine if you are eligible for the earned income tax credit.
  • Sites open starting January 24 through April 2009.
  • What Is The Northern Virginia (NOVA) Cash Campaign?
    The Northern Virginia CASH Campaign provides free tax preparation services to low-income members of the Northern Virginia community. Through a coalition of libraries, faith and community-based groups, public agencies, and businesses the mission is to increase financial literacy among low-income taxpayers.

• Poplar Tree Road widening project meeting is rescheduled for Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m.
  • Due to inclement weather the March 2nd, 2009 meeting to discuss the Poplar Tree Road widening project was canceled.

• Free workshops on Managing resident Canada Geese - Mar 25 and 28 by the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District - The Green Breakfast Facilitator
  • Free Workshops on Geese Conflicts - Large flocks of geese are attracted to areas that provide food, water and protection. Lakes and ponds in urban areas offer the resources they need to survive; but this also means dealing with goose droppings that pollute local waters, inappropriate nesting areas, and at times, aggressive behavior.
  • Two identical workshopswill be held to discuss proven strategies for humanely stabilizing and reducing geese populations

Also, find out how to make sites unattractive to geese, when it is appropriate to chase geese away and when it is not, and why feeding geese is not good for the geese or the community.   • WHAT: A free program for adults, an evening of dialogue with a panel of senior students to discuss drugs, alcohol, parties, driving, sexting, and communication between teens and parents.
  • This program was well received the past 4 years by Westfield and Middle School parents and is being brought back by popular demand. Join us for an “eye-opening” and honest discussion. Even if you think your teen is behaving, come out and hear what pressures your child has or will have to deal with and what others are involved in! Knowledge is power, and prevention starts early…

Many of you have expressed interest in our other smart growth programs, and we hope you will consider participating in this one as well. Whether you represent government, the environmental community, business or land development, we need your input! Please join us on April 2.   • The Washington Smart Growth Alliance invites you to attend our 2009 Annual Conservation Summit at 12:30 – 3:30 P.M. on April 2, 2009. The summit will be held at the Greater Washington Board of Trade SunTrust Conference Center, 1725 I Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20006.
  • Why you should attend
    This summit is the official launch of our Regional Conservation Priorities program, which will culminate in the publication of our Regional Conservation Priorities report in the fall. This yearly report highlights conservation projects that are deemed critical to the future quality of life for the region and that would benefit most from timely recognition and a boost in business sector and general public awareness and endorsement. The benefits of listing include business recognition, publicity surrounding the publication release, letters and testimony on behalf of each project, and other opportunities for speaking engagements and support. Summit attendees will have further opportunities to participate in the program during the year and will receive a copy of the 2009 Regional Conservation Priorities report.
  • The agenda
    The summit program will begin with lunch and a brief talk by George Hawkins, the District of Columbia Director of Environment, on the importance of conservation to the region’s quality of life and overall sustainability. George brings to the region the insights of a diverse background in environmental law, smart growth advocacy, and innovative conservation initiatives. The main work will take place in three facilitated breakouts (by jurisdiction - Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia), where participants will generate a list of potential nominee projects as well as identify overarching themes that cross jurisdictional lines. The meeting will adjourn promptly at 3:30 P.M.
  • Who should attend?
    Attendees recognize the value of setting conservation priorities with an organization that blends the interests of businesses, environmental groups, governmental agencies and civic groups. Join this diverse group for a lively discussion of conservation priorities for the region!

• Assistance League® of Northern Virginia Host’s Author’s Tea

• Virginia's first Invasive Plant Removal Day on May 2
  • Virginia Master Naturalists and the Virginia Native Plant Society are co-sponsoring the first-ever, Virginia Invasive Plant Removal Day on Saturday, May 2. Events are being planned throughout Virginia and will involve students, families, citizen groups and government agencies in an effort to rid natural areas of non-native plants.
  • This is an opportunity to host a project site, or to participate at an existing site. Anyone who would like to register an event or volunteer to help at a nearby site, should go to: http://www.virginiamasternaturalist.org/invasives/index.html.
  • Non-native, invasive species cause ecological and economic harm. They typically mature quickly, generate many offspring and can tolerate a wide range of habitats. Because they are able to successfully establish in new territory, invasive species out-compete native species for the same resources and eventually harm trees, wildlife and water quality. They are a serious threat to the quality of our natural areas.
  • Invasives have taken a firm foothold in many parts of the state and everyone's help is needed to reclaim our natural areas. Removing invasive plants and sowing native flora is a fantastic way to restore water quality and wildlife habitat.
