5. The Joint Sully Land Use and Transportation Committee (JSDLU&TC) met on 20 May 2024. See the agenda for more particulars

6. Items of General Interest:
   • Amendments to the Fairfax County Code Relating to the Right-of-Way Afforded to Pedestrians
   Fairfax County Code Sections 82-9-2 and 82-9-7 were amended following a public hearing on May 7 to:
   • authorize the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to install signs at marked crosswalks requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians; and
   • prohibit the overtaking of vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.
   • The Code of Virginia was changed last year to require drivers to stop for pedestrians crossing within their lane or within an adjacent lane and to allow localities to install stop-for-pedestrian signs at marked crosswalks. The May 7 public hearing and adoption of amendments ensure that these state-level changes are reflected in the corresponding parts of the Fairfax County Code.

7. Scheduled Meetings/Events
• Virtual Public Meeting on the Planned Construction of Shared-Use Paths Along Route 29 in Centreville
The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a virtual public information meeting on Wednesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. about the planned construction of shared-use paths along two segments of southbound Route 29 in Centreville. The project aims to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety, mobility, accessibility and connectivity by:
• Upgrading the existing sidewalk/trail along southbound Route 29 to a 10-foot-wide shared-use path between the Newgate Shopping Center and the western Trinity Parkway intersection
• Upgrading the existing sidewalk along southbound Route 29 between O’Day Drive and Stone Road to a 10-foot-wide shared-use path

• Second Virtual Community Meeting for the Route 29 Study Set for June 5
• The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a second virtual public meeting regarding the Route 29 Corridor Study on Wednesday, June 5, at 7 p.m. The purpose of this session will be to summarize the community feedback received after the first meeting and to present at-grade intersection improvements and modifications that address bicycle and pedestrian comfort and safety, as well as operational efficiencies. The instructions for joining the meeting as well as project details are available on the Route 29 Study webpage.
• List of Upcoming Sustainability-Related Initiatives and Resources
There are various sustainability-related events and initiatives for community members to engage with over the next coming weeks. We have compiled them into the following list as an overview:

• Register for a Webinar About Resources Available to Businesses Making Energy Efficiency Upgrades to Their Facilities
  • A free webinar will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at 12:30 p.m. to discuss resources and incentives available to businesses that embark on energy efficiency projects.
• Nominate for the 2024 Environmental Excellence Awards
  • This annual award ceremony recognizes people and organizations for their work in protecting our environment. Nominations can be submitted online by any member of the public now through Sunday, June 9.
• Register for an Information Session About Solar Panel Installation for Homeowners and Small Businesses
  • Solar United Neighbors will hold an in-person session at the Kings Park Library (9000 Burke Lake Road) on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. This non-profit group facilitates the Solar Switch campaign, which assists community members in their exploration of solar energy by providing expert advice and support.
• Apply to a Program Helping Community Associations Install Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
  • The Charge Up Fairfax program is accepting applications now through Sunday, June 30 from community associations (HOAs, condominiums, clusters, and co-ops). Participating communities will receive technical and financial support to make it easier for them to install electric vehicle charging stations. Another application window is expected to open later this fall.
• Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) held two virtual community meetings to share the proposed preferred changes to Fairfax Connector bus service to take effect in December 2024.

  These modifications, including the addition of two new routes, are part of Phase II of the Centreville, Chantilly, Vienna, and Tysons (CCVT), and Franconia-Springfield service adjustments. The plan aims to align bus service with current ridership demand. The routes that will be discussed: 335, 351, 352, 610 (new), 670 (new) and 921.

• Invitation to Monument Garage ribbon cutting on June 20, 11 AM
• We are delighted to announce the grand opening of Monument Garage, a pivotal addition to Fairfax County’s infrastructure. Convenient to the I-66 Express lanes, this state-of-the-art facility features 820 free parking spaces, access to over 20 bus routes, rideshare lines and secure bike storage. The Garage is part of the launch of the Fairfax Connector Services changes from Centreville, Chantilly, Vienna Metrorail to Tysons and the on to Franconia.
