• James Walkinshaw, chief of staff for U. S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, represented the congressman. Walkinshaw noted that 700,000 jobs were being lost each month when Connolly took office. The banking, auto, and real estate markets were in disarray. Walkinshaw said the American Recovery and Restructuring Act, which Connolly supported, has stabilized these markets and given the U.S. eight consecutive months of private sector job growth.

• Walkinshaw said the stimulus package and “Pay go,” established under President Clinton in the 1990s, are helping the economy. He blamed President G. W. Bush for the economic distress.

• No one represented Keith Fimian. Walkinshaw left after answering some challenging questions.

1. Rep. Frank Wolf, Republican Party Candidate
   • Delegate Jim LeMunyon spoke on behalf of U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, who is running for re-election in the 10th District.
   • LeMunyon said Wolf has been working on transportation issues for our region. Wolf asked the federal government to open the “slip” lanes along I-66 to non-HOV lanes to help relieve traffic congestion. The federal government agreed. Wolf is trying to improve traffic flow near Fair Lakes. Also, the congressman is hoping to fund a project that will allow VDOT to open shoulder lanes automatically when roads are packed. The project estimate is $25 million. In addition, LeMunyon said Wolf is hoping to get funding for widening Rt. 50 west of South Riding.
   • The delegate said the election is a referendum on federal participation in the lives of citizens. Wolf wants limited government. LeMunyon said, “Government is best that governs the closest to the people.”

2. Jeff Barnett, Democrat Party Candidate
   • Mr. Barnett said he is running for Congress because “the country is in trouble.” He said Rep. Wolf is partly responsible because he chaired the subcommittee that had direct oversight of Wall Street. Wolf voted for TARP, but not the stimulus package.
   • Barnett retired as a full colonel from the Air Force after 26 years of service. He worked as a peacekeeper in the Balkans. He has lived in Northern Virginia for 24 years.
   • Barnett said he and his wife have walked 80 miles across the 10th District to meet voters.
   • The candidate said he wants to have a fifth runway added to Dulles Airport so our region can become an international hub. He said millions of people are coming, and will come, to our area for jobs and opportunities.
   • Barnett wants to help small businesses get direct access to federal funding and contracts. Currently, prime contractors receive priority.

3. William Redpath, Libertarian Party Candidate
   • Mr. Redpath has served as national president of the Libertarian Party. He said he wants to cut the size of the federal government.
   • Redpath said Rep. Wolf scored the worst in Virginia by the Tax-payers Union.
   • According to Redpath, the CATO Institute postulates that the U.S. can eliminate the federal deficit if we can hold spending increases to just 2 percent per fiscal year. Redpath said we can do this by cutting or reducing expenditures for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Redpath favors allowing citizens to invest their money in the stock market for retirement instead of using Social Security funds. Also, seniors should shop for medical services and seniors with comfortable incomes should not receive as much money as poor, elderly people.
   • Redpath would like to eliminate DOE, the Dept. of Education, HUD, HHS and the Dept. of Agriculture.
   • Redpath is for the flat tax, immigration reform, and free trade.

4. Members of the Sully District Council and the community asked questions and a lively debate ensued.
